NETWORK SECURITY / DATA PRIVACYARE GOALS OF LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITY
|
| Did you know that Nevada and Massachusetts have passed noteworthy legislation recently in the area of network security? Nevada passed a bill that requires businesses, beginning in 2010, to use data encryption for personal information both at rest and in motion. Massachusetts has enacted a law seen as having even stricter encryption requirements. Legicrawler CEO Beckie Krantz joined network security expert Karen Worstell to discuss these issues at the Secure World Expo in Bellevue, WA last week. Worstell, former Chief Information Security Officer for Microsoft, said 44 states have enacted network security laws. She noted the widespread public focus on the security of personal information on the internet, adding, "you no longer have an excuse for noncompliance." Krantz demonstrated how automated tools can save one time and cost in tracking state and federal legislative developments. Network experts, Krantz said, should identify their industry, check the FTC for updates, access online research tools, and use them. One should also become familiar with a state's Attorney General website. With this baseline and consultation with legal counsel, one should use automated tracking tools to keep the baseline current, Krantz said. Worstell urged experts to voice their opinions in the creation of new laws. She noted a clear cycle of public issue awareness, political action, and then legislative activity. At any point, she emphasized, experts could impact the outcome. She said a conference of network security experts meeting in Portugal one year adjourned proceedings to schedule calls to Washington, DC regarding a crucial federal bill. The effort helped change important language in the bill before passage, she said.
